The history of the brand Challenger began in 1890, when two Americans Benjamin Holt and Daniel Best began to test steam tractors in agriculture. Benjamin Holt tried to enlarge the contact area with the ground and came up with the idea to replace the wheels with tracks. In 1904, he tested the first crawler tractor, and shortly afterwards the company registered the trademark Caterpillar. In 1909, the company started production, and the first crawler tractors were sold to customers.
In 1925, the companies Holt Manufacturing Company and CL Best Tractor Company merged to form Caterpillar Tractor Co.
